How to modify the formatting for the default format of sections, paragraphs, and tables in a Word document?

4 mins read

Syncfusion Essential DocIO is a .NET Core Word Library used to create, read, edit, and convert Word documents programmatically without Microsoft Word or interop dependencies. Using this library, you can modify the formatting for the default format of paragraphs, sections, and tables in a Word document using C#.

Steps to modify default formats in Word document

  1. Create a new C# Console application project. CreateConsoleApp.png
  2. Install the Syncfusion.DocIO.Net.Core NuGet package as a reference to your project from Nuget.org.

Starting with v16.2.0.x, if you reference Syncfusion assemblies from trial setup or from the NuGet feed, include a license key in your projects. Refer to the link to learn about generating and registering a Syncfusion license key in your application to use the components without trail message.

  1. Include the following namespace in the Program.cs file.
    C#
using Syncfusion.DocIO;
using Syncfusion.DocIO.DLS;
  1. Include the below code snippet to modify the formatting for default style in a Word document.
    C#
using (FileStream fileStreamPath = new FileStream(@"Input.docx", FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read, FileShare.ReadWrite))
{
   //Open the existing Word document.
   using (WordDocument document = new WordDocument(fileStreamPath, FormatType.Docx))
   {
       //Change section formatting
       ChangeSectionFormatting(document);
       //Change paragraph style formatting
       ChangeParagraphFormatting(document);
       //Change table style formatting
       ChangeTableFormatting(document);
       using (FileStream outputStream = new FileStream(@"Output.docx", FileMode.Create, FileAccess.ReadWrite, FileShare.ReadWrite))
       {
           //Save the Word document.
           document.Save(outputStream, FormatType.Docx);
       }
   }
}
  1. Use the following method to modify the section formatting.
    C#
void ChangeSectionFormatting(WordDocument document)
{
   //Iterate each section.
   for (int i = 0; i < document.Sections.Count; i++)
   {
       //Set the Orientation.
       document.Sections[i].PageSetup.Orientation = PageOrientation.Landscape;
       //Set the top margin.
       document.Sections[i].PageSetup.Margins.Top = 100;
   }
}
  1. Word document uses “Normal” paragraph style as default for all paragraphs. Use the following method to modify the formatting for default paragraph style.
    C#
void ChangeParagraphFormatting(WordDocument document)
{
   //Get the default paragraph style.
   WParagraphStyle paraStyle = document.Styles.FindByName("Normal") as WParagraphStyle;
   //Set character format.
   paraStyle.CharacterFormat.FontName = "Arial";
   paraStyle.CharacterFormat.FontSize = 14;
   //Set paragraph format.
   paraStyle.ParagraphFormat.AfterSpacing = 20;
}
  1. Word document uses “Table Grid” table style as default for all tables. Use the following method to modify the formatting for default table style.
    C#
void ChangeTableFormatting(WordDocument document)
{
   //Get the default table style.
   WTableStyle tableStyle = document.Styles.FindByName("Table Grid") as WTableStyle;
   //Set cell spacing to the table.
   tableStyle.TableProperties.CellSpacing = 5;
   //Applied BackColor to the table.
   tableStyle.TableProperties.BackColor = Syncfusion.Drawing.Color.Blue;
}
