How to copy style between Word documents

4 mins read

Syncfusion® Essential® DocIO is a .NET Word Library used to create, read, edit, and convert Word documents programmatically without Microsoft Word or interop dependencies. Using this library, you can copy style between Word documents using C#.

To achieve this, follow the steps below,

  • Retrieve a custom paragraph style from the source document.
  • Clone the retrieved style and add it to the destination document.
  • Apply the newly added style to the required paragraph in the destination document.

Steps to copy style between Word documents:

  1. Create a new .NET Core console application project. Create console application in Visual Studio
  2. Install the Syncfusion.DocIO.Net.Core NuGet package as a reference to your project from NuGet.org.
    Add DocIO NuGet package reference to the project

Starting with v16.2.0.x, if you reference Syncfusion® assemblies from trial setup or from the NuGet feed, include a license key in your projects. Refer to the link to learn about generating and registering a Syncfusion® license key in your application to use the components without trail message.

  1. Include the following namespaces in Program.cs file.
    C#
using Syncfusion.DocIO;
using Syncfusion.DocIO.DLS;
  1. Use the following code example to copy style between Word documents.
    C#
using (FileStream destinationStream = new FileStream(Path.GetFullPath(@"Data/DestinationDocument.docx"), FileMode.Open, FileAccess.ReadWrite))
{
   //Open the destination document.
   using (WordDocument destinationDocument = new WordDocument(destinationStream, FormatType.Docx))
   {
       using (FileStream sourceStream = new FileStream(Path.GetFullPath(@"Data/SourceDocument.docx"), FileMode.Open, FileAccess.ReadWrite))
       {
           //Open the source document.
           using (WordDocument sourceDocument = new WordDocument(sourceStream, FormatType.Docx))
           {
               // Retrieve the specific style from the source document.
               WParagraphStyle paraStyle = sourceDocument.Styles.FindByName("MyStyle") as WParagraphStyle;
               // Add the retrieved style to the destination document.
               destinationDocument.Styles.Add(paraStyle.Clone());
               // Get the first paragraph in the destination document.
               WParagraph paragraph = destinationDocument.Sections[0].Body.ChildEntities[0] as WParagraph;
               // Apply the retrieved style to the paragraph in the destination document.
               paragraph.ApplyStyle("MyStyle");
               // Save the destination document.
               using (FileStream outputStream = new FileStream(Path.GetFullPath(@"Output/Result.docx"), FileMode.Create, FileAccess.ReadWrite))
               {
                   destinationDocument.Save(outputStream, FormatType.Docx);
               }
           }
       }
