How to Apply List Numbering When Merging .NET Core Word Documents?

6 mins read

Syncfusion® Essential® DocIO is a .NET Word library used to create, read, edit, and convert Word documents programmatically without Microsoft Word or interop dependencies. Using this library, you can apply continuous list numbering when merging two documents with different list styles using C#.

Steps to apply continuous list numbering when merging two documents with different list styles:

  1. Create a new .NET Core console application project. Create console application in Visual Studio
  2. Install the Syncfusion.DocIO.Net.Core NuGet package as a reference to your project from NuGet.org.
    Add DocIO NuGet package reference to the project

Starting with v16.2.0.x, if you reference Syncfusion® assemblies from trial setup or from the NuGet feed, include a license key in your projects. Refer to the link to learn about generating and registering a Syncfusion® license key in your application to use the components without trail message.

  1. Include the following namespaces in Program.cs file
    C#
using Syncfusion.DocIO.DLS;
using Syncfusion.DocIO;
  1. Use the following code example to apply continuous list numbering when merging two documents with different list styles.
    C#
using (FileStream destinationStream = new FileStream(Path.GetFullPath("Data/DestinationDocument.docx"), FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read, FileShare.ReadWrite))
{
   // Open the destination Word document.
   using (WordDocument destinationDocument = new WordDocument(destinationStream, FormatType.Docx))
   {
       using (FileStream sourceStream = new FileStream(Path.GetFullPath("Data/SourceDocument.docx"), FileMode.Open, FileAccess.ReadWrite))
       {
           // Open the source Word document.
           using (WordDocument sourceDocument = new WordDocument(sourceStream, FormatType.Docx))
           {
               // Set the break code as no break to prevent page breaks.
               sourceDocument.Sections[0].BreakCode = SectionBreakCode.NoBreak;
               // Initialize a variable to hold the list style from the destination document.
               ListStyle listStyle = null;
               // Iterate through the paragraphs in the last section of the destination document.
               int paragraphCount = destinationDocument.LastSection.Paragraphs.Count;
               for (int i = paragraphCount - 1; i >= 0; i--)
               {
                   WParagraph paragraph = destinationDocument.LastSection.Paragraphs[i];
                   // Get the current list style.
                   if (paragraph.ListFormat.CurrentListStyle != null)
                       listStyle = paragraph.ListFormat.CurrentListStyle;
                   else
                   {
                       // Check the paragraph style for a list style and store it.
                       WParagraphStyle style = destinationDocument.Styles.FindByName(paragraph.StyleName) as WParagraphStyle;
                       if (style != null)
                           listStyle = style.ListFormat.CurrentListStyle;
                   }
                   // Break the loop if a list style is found.
                   if (listStyle != null)
                       break;
               }
               // Import the content of the source document at the end of the destination document.
               destinationDocument.ImportContent(sourceDocument, ImportOptions.ListContinueNumbering);
               if (listStyle != null)
               {
                   // Apply liststyle to the paragraphs in the destination document to maintain continuous numbering.
                   foreach (WParagraph paragraph in destinationDocument.LastSection.Paragraphs)
                   {
                       if (paragraph.ListFormat.CurrentListStyle != null)
                           paragraph.ListFormat.ApplyStyle(listStyle.Name);
                   }
               }
               // Save the merged document.
               using (FileStream outputStream = new FileStream(Path.GetFullPath("Output/Result.docx"), FileMode.Create, FileAccess.ReadWrite))
               {
                   destinationDocument.Save(outputStream, FormatType.Docx);
               }
           }
       }
   }
}
