How to perform mail merge in column wise in a Word document?

4 mins read

Syncfusion® Essential® DocIO is a .NET Word library used to create, read, edit, and convert Word documents programmatically without Microsoft Word or interop dependencies. Using this library, you can perform mail merge in column wise in a Word document using C#.

To merge different data into the same merge fields in a column-wise manner, create a template Word document by following these steps.

  • First, create a table with two columns and add merge fields in both cells of the first row.
  • To insert the next record in the second column, include the Next field after the merge field in the first cell. Once the mail merge is executed, the first cell will display the first record, while the second cell will display the next record.

Note: To see the Next field in template document, press ALT + F9 in Microsoft Word to toggle field codes.

Steps to perform mail merge in column wise in a Word document:

  1. Create a new .NET Core console application project. Create console application in Visual Studio
  2. Install the Syncfusion.DocIO.Net.Core NuGet package as a reference to your project from NuGet.org.
    Add DocIO NuGet package reference to the project

Starting with v16.2.0.x, if you reference Syncfusion® assemblies from trial setup or from the NuGet feed, include a license key in your projects. Refer to the link to learn about generating and registering a Syncfusion® license key in your application to use the components without trail message.

  1. Include the following namespaces in Program.cs file
    C#
using Syncfusion.DocIO.DLS;
using Syncfusion.DocIO;
  1. Use the following code example to perform mail merge in column wise in a Word document.
    C#
//Open the file as Stream.
using (FileStream fileStream = new FileStream(Path.GetFullPath(@"Data/Template.docx"), FileMode.Open))
{
   //Get the data for mail merge.
   DataTable table = GetDataTable();
   //Iterate to the each row and generate mail merged document for each rows.
   for (int i = 0; i < table.Rows.Count; i++)
   {
       //Load file stream into Word document.
       using (WordDocument document = new WordDocument(fileStream, FormatType.Docx))
       {
           //Executes mail merge using the data row.
           document.MailMerge.Execute(table.Rows[i]);

           //Create a file stream.
           using (FileStream outputFileStream = new FileStream(Path.GetFullPath(@"Output/" + "Record_" + (i + 1) + ".docx"), FileMode.Create, FileAccess.ReadWrite))
           {
               //Save the Word document to the file stream.
               document.Save(outputFileStream, FormatType.Docx);
           }
       }
   }
}
  1. Use the following code example to create a data to execute mail merge in Word document.

   customers.Add(new CustomerDetail("Brent", "#12, London Road", string.Empty, string.Empty, "Oxford,", "United Kingdom"));
   customers.Add(new CustomerDetail("Mani", "#12, Steve Lane,", string.Empty, string.Empty, "Dublin,", "Ireland"));
   return customers;
}
