How to Set Top Margins in Word and Convert to PDF with C# .NET Core?

Syncfusion® Essential® DocIO is a .NET Word library used to create, read, edit, and convert Word documents programmatically without Microsoft Word or interop dependencies. Using this library, you can set different top margins in a word document and convert to PDF using C#.

A Word document is a flow document in which contents are preserved sequentially section by section, rather than page by page. Margins are a section-based property, and in this example, we have set different margin values in multiple sections.

Steps to set different top margins in a word document and convert to PDF:

  1. Create a new .NET Core console application project.
    Create console application in Visual Studio
  2. Install the Syncfusion.DocIORenderer.NET.Core NuGet package as a reference to your .NET Core application from NuGet.org.
    Install DocIORenderer NuGet package

Starting with v16.2.0.x, if you reference Syncfusion® assemblies from a trial setup or from the NuGet feed, include a license key in your projects. Refer to the link to learn about generating and registering a Syncfusion® license key in your application to use the components without a trial message.

  1. Include the following namespaces in the Program.cs file.
    C#
using Syncfusion.DocIO;
using Syncfusion.DocIO.DLS;
using Syncfusion.DocIORenderer;
using Syncfusion.Pdf;
  1. Use the following code example to set different top margins in a word document and convert it to PDF.
    C#
//Load the Word document
WordDocument document = new WordDocument(Path.GetFullPath(@"Data/Input.docx"));
int sectionsCount = document.Sections.Count;
// Loop through all sections in the document
for (int i = 0; i < sectionsCount; i++)
{
    // Get the current section
    IWSection section = document.Sections[i];
    // Set the top margin based on whether it's the first or last section
    if (i == 0 || i == sectionsCount - 1)
        section.PageSetup.Margins.Top = 200; // Apply a top margin of 200 for the first section and last section
    else
        section.PageSetup.Margins.Top = 90;  // Apply a top margin of 90 for all other sections
}
//Creates an instance of DocIORenderer.
DocIORenderer converter = new DocIORenderer();
// Convert the Word document to PDF
PdfDocument pdf = converter.ConvertToPDF(document);
//Saves the PDF file to file system.
FileStream fileStream = new FileStream(Path.GetFullPath(@"../../../Output/Output.pdf"), FileMode.OpenOrCreate, FileAccess.ReadWrite);
pdf.Save(fileStream);
// Dispose resources
fileStream.Dispose();
pdf.Dispose();
converter.Dispose();
document.Close();
